Poul nielson on official visit to pacific

Brussels, 29/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - Poul Nielson, Commissioner for Co-operation and Humanitarian Aid, is visiting the Pacific region until 8 February , sub-region of the ACP group (Africa/Caribbean/Pacific), where positive political developments have enabled the EU to recommence co-operation without restrictions for Fiji and the Salomon Islands. The Commissioner begins this visit with new Zealand and Australia , two important partners for the Pacific member countries of the ACP group. Peace and security in the region, regional economic integration and sustainable development are on the agenda.

In the Salomon Islands, (3-5 February) , meetings with government representatives will focus on the general political situation and the national reform process, allocated 14.5 million euros by the EU under the 9th Fed for 2003-2007. Poul Nielson will sign a declaration of intention confirming the EU's participation, alongside New Zealand, for a 22 million euro education programme managed by Salomon authorities.

In Fiji, (5-8 February) with whom co-operation recommenced in November 2003, Poul Nielson and Prime Minister Qarase will sign a strategy document and five-year national indicative programme for 23.1 million euros. The Commissioner will also meet the head of the Labour party, Mr Chaudry. Together with the deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Josefa Maiva, he will draw up a progress report on regional economic integration, with the perspective of an economic partnership agreement to be negotiated with the EU.
