Brussels, 27/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Central Bank (ECB), like the European Commission, thinks that "implementation of the stability and growth pact could be improved, particularly concerning the analysis of structural balances and the strengthening incentives for solid budgetary policies". This view as expressed by Jean-Claude Trichet on Monday at an economic conference in London. Nevertheless, the ECB does not see the need for amending the treaty as the stability pact in its "current shape" is working adequately, asserted Mr Trichet. He added that the ECB "respected" the decision of the European Commission to appeal to the Court of Justice against the decision of the Ecofin Council for freezing the proceedings for excessive deficit against France and Germany.
