29/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Annamaria Campogrande, an Italian civil servant at the European Commission, is continuing her fight against the predominance of English in daily life at the European institutions. In a letter to Neil Kinnock, vice-president of the European Commission, she deplored the enormous difficulties she has encountered lately when using her computer. "The least little operation produces messages, which are always in English, asking me incomprehensible questions and preventing me from getting on with my work", complained Mrs Campogrande. She mentioned that the Adonis system used at the Commission is inaccessible due to its complexity and "above all because, yet again, everything is in English only, as if it were only speakers of English who had the right to work within the Commission services from now on". Mrs Campogrande is rebelling against the imposition of unilingualism and urges the Commission to implement "a general interest policy on languages, based on a better balance between languages and populations".
