Brussels, 28/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Statewatch is concerned at the civil liberties situation in the European Union. In a contribution to the EU Network of Independent Experts of Fundamental Rights for its 2003 report, the organisation for the defence of civil liberties states that "the 'war on terrorism' is having a detrimental effect on people's rights and liberties and democratic standards, both at the national and European levels". Its dossier summarises various press releases published over the last few months, in which Statewatch expresses concern notably about the project to introduce biometric data into visas, exchange of data with third countries (especially the United States), and the various co-ordination projects for the expulsion and re-admission of people without papers.
