Javier Solana welcomes agreement reached in Pretoria

Brussels, 09/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, High Representative of the Union for common foreign and security policy, has welcomed the agreement reached in Pretoria on 8 October, between the Burundian government and the rebel movement CNDD/FDD. He has published the following statement: "this agreement is a positive step in the integration of the rebel movement into the peace process and therefore into the political and military institutions of Burundi. I welcome the courage of both parties present in Pretoria, President Domitien Ndayizeye and the CNDD/FDD leader, Pierre Nkurunziza. I join in with their call for an immediate end to all hostilities in Burundi, and appeal to the FNL, the only rebel movement which has not joined the agreement, to enter into the process. Today's agreement proves that political solutions are possible if all shareholders work for them". Mr Solana also paid tribute to the South African President, Thabo Mbeki, for his personal involvement in looking for a lasting solution for Burundi.
