Brussels, 22/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of the European United Left/Nordic Greens Left (GUE-NGL) at the European Parliament, headed by its president Francis Wurtz, met Yasser Arafat, the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, in Ramallah (West Bank) on Saturday. Mr Arafat thanked Europe "for its unanimous position in the U N General Assembly" and expressed his hope that Europe would now act "very quickly" in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The delegation headed by Francis Wurtz, for its part, described the decision by the Israeli government to banish - and possibly eliminate - the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, as "extremely serious" and "totally unacceptable". "This decision shows the urgent need to revive the dynamic of peace talks", Francis Wurtz added in a press release. The delegation "noted with great interest the determination reiterated by President Arafat to work towards a ceasefire - and not only a truce". Mr Arafat also confirmed to the delegation that the new Palestinian government "would be established in the next days" and that "as was the wish of President Abu Ala, it will include representatives of all organisations". The delegation also met the two main promoters of the "Coalition for the Peace", Yossi Beilin, a former Israeli minister, and Yasser Abde Rabbo, Palestinian Minister, who, according to the press release, share the position taken by the GUE-NGL delegation for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: - priority to the fight against terrorism while seeking through political action to isolate the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, in order to create an "alternative policy". Finally, Messrs Beilin and Abde Rabbo accepted the principle of a joint visit to the Parliament mid-November.
