09/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - At the Cancun Ministerial Conference, the Trans-national farmers movement, Via Campesina, will be reiterating its demand for the "withdrawal of food and farming farm World Trade Organisation (WTO) control". The organisation considers that the multilateral agreement on farming and other free trade agreements have a very negative effect on local food production". Via Campesina reasserts the "fundamental rights of all the community to produce its own food and food sovereignty. This also goes for fishing communities "strongly affected by the commercialisation of their work" and whose " "aquatic resource rights" should be protected. Via Campesina is calling for the end of negotiations on the liberalisation and the privatisation process in the services sector in order to "ensure adequate levels of infrastructure and services".
