Brussels, 09/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has assured Ahmed KoreÏ that he will receive EU support.. In a telephone conversation on Monday evening, described as "long and cordial" by the Italian authorities, the Acting President of the EU Council assured the new Palestinian Prime Minister that he had the "complete support of the EU". Before agreeing to being Prime Minister, Ahmed KoreÏ wanted the support of the USA and the European Union (EUROPE yesterday p 7). During the telephone conversation, he requested, explained the Italian Presidency, "that the European Union is committed to the continuation of the reform process in negotiations and that it exercises pressure on all parties so that they contribute to assuring the conditions for a return, as soon as possible, to the negotiating table". The USA has turned out to be more reserved, declaring that it will wait to see what the new powers of the Prime Minister will be and what he will do.
