Brussels, 25/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - The vice-president of the European Parliament, Ingo Friedrichu (CSU), stresses in a press release that very few citizens really know what the draft constitutional treaty by the European Convention contains. He therefore calls on the federal government to organise a vast information campaign in Germany. "People in Germany would not understand why, unlike most of their neighbours, they would not have the possibility to give their stance on the treaty", the German Christian Democrat also says, urging for limited reform of the German Constitution with a view to authorising the referendum for the EU Constitution as an exceptional measure.
Mr Friedrich also insists that the German government should ensure, during the Intergovernmental Conference, that the "centralising tendencies of Brussels" be limited within social and immigration policies. He also recalls that a reference to God is still lacking in the preliminary to the draft.
