Commission to resume work on Wednesday next with first meeting devoted to summer disasters and preparation of IGC

Brussels, 22/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson will be received by the European Commission President, Romano Prodi, on Tuesday 26 August, a little over two weeks from the referendum to be held on 14 September on Sweden's accession to single currency. Also on Tuesday, Vice-President Loyola de Palacio will meet German Transport Minister Manfred Stolpe. They will seek to reach an agreement on introducing a toll for heavy vehicles in Germany (EUROPE of 26 July, p.10).

On Wednesday, the College will hold its first meeting after the summer break. Intervention from the Solidarity Fund for natural disasters to help Portugal that is severely hit by fires, and the Intergovernmental Conference on the new constitutional treaty will be the main subjects of the meeting, the Commission spokesperson said. Commissioner Michel Barnier, responsible for both dossiers, is expected to hold a press conference the same day.
