EU Command Element at Afsouth

Brussels, 01/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - In the context of the "Berlin Plus" agreement, a SHAPE press statement has indicated that, "the EU Command Element at NATO (EUCE) (for the first European military mission, 'Concordia', in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), has been formed at the NATO Regional Headquarters, AFSOUTH in Naples". The EUCE in Naples includes military personnel from Member States of the European Union overseeing operational issues related to the peacekeeping mission in FYROM. SHAPE indicates that there are two kinds of personnel: EU officers and a staff group belonging to AFSOUTH and NATO. SHAPE points out that the strategic commander of the Concordia operation is the German Admiral Rainer Feist. He is supported by the EU Operations Headquarters (OHQ) located at SHAPE in Casteau, Belgium. It is staffed by officers from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria, Belgium, Finland and Sweden. The NATO council has extended the availability of NATO's assets for the European Union's operation in Macedonia until 15 December 2003.
