Demonstration in Rome on 4 October for genuine social Europe

Brussels, 25/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - To mark the start of the ICG on the Constitution for Europe, the European Trade Union Confederation is organising a demonstration in Rome on 4 October calling for a stronger social dimension in tomorrow's Europe and to demonstrate the urgent need to create more jobs and better economic prospects in Europe. The trade unions will also be calling for the development and maintenance of acceptable retirement measures in the face of falling birth rates and longer life expectancy. In a press release, the ETUC notes that the Italian Presidency, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission must recognise that it is only through social and environmental progress that economic progress can be made.
