Agenda for last meeting before summer break

Brussels, 18/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, Reijo Kemppinen, the spokesman for the President of the Commission, Romano Prodi, announced that during the last weekly meeting before the summer holidays, on Wednesday 23 July, the European Commission was expected to approve a legislative proposal to set up a European Centre for the Prevention and Control of Contagious Diseases. In order to take on board the wishes of Health Ministers, expressed during their most recent meetings, this centre should be operational by 2005 and could help enhance synergies between national structures for combating diseases by setting up a network. The Commission is also expected to adopt a proposal on the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol (see EUROPE 17 June p 8) and submit amendments as it hops to do with the "Eurovignette", a case which constitutes one of the main priorities in the "transport" programme of the Italian Presidency of the EU. Mr Kemppinen also announced that the college would be adopting a legislative "package" in the framework of reform of competition policy, as well as another "package" to create a better Commission administration.
