2.5 million EUR for border management and police reform programmes in Central ASIA

Brussels, 15/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission adopted a decision on Tuesday to grant 2.5 million EUR for border management and police reform programmes in Central Asia under its Rapid Reaction Mechanism. The aim is to improve the region's capabilities to fight the illicit trafficking of drugs, arms and human beings. An envelope of 1.5 million EUR will be used to launch the first phase of the EU's border management programme in Central Asia (BOMCA). The second phase of the programme, which has an overall cost of 210 million EUR, will be co-financed by the TACIS (technical assistance to countries of the former USSR). 1 million EUR will be contributed to Kyrgyzstan's police assistance programme, which was set up by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which hopes to reform the sector via such means as advice and training.
