20/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Association for the Protection of Human Rights and the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues have asked the Thessaloniki Summit not to prescribe a "restrictive approach" to asylum and immigration policy, and to resist "the temptation to be insular". They are particularly concerned about "externalisation of asylum applications" projects, and warn: experience shows that this type of "delocalisation" does not guarantee sufficient protection: and it will force "targeted countries to take on the role of border watchdogs for Fortress Europe, while they already support most of the world's refugees".
