02/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Irish MEP John Cushnahan, one of the EP's representatives to the European Convention, has issued a warning to the Irish government's representative to the Convention, Dick Rocke, who, along with other Convention Members, has asked for the institutional package of Nice not to be re-opened (see p.5). "I would like to know what price the Irish government would pay" for the deal, asked the Fine Gael MEP, who wonders whether Dublin will "accept the Giscard d'Estaing proposal for a powerful President of the Council". He feels that having one Commissioner per country would not be enough to "prevent the domination of the EU by the larger countries". To stop this from happening, we need a strong Commission headed by a strong President, with, perhaps, "an inner cabinet appointed by its President, which would operate on the principle of collective responsibility", states the Parliamentarian, noting that, to do these, it will doubtless be necessary to amend Nice.
