Commission's anti-corruption proposals

Brussels, 30/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission could draft a proposal to ensure the transparency of financing for social partners, interest groups and electoral spending. This is a path that it considers in the Communication relating to a global EU policy against corruption approved by written procedure, on Wednesday. Thus the Commission may, if need be, submit a proposal on common standards for the detection and prosecution of corruption: gathering of evidence, technical instructions, protection of informants, and the confiscation of criminal profits. It would also like to adhere and take part in the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO), responsible for ensuring respect for the OECD Convention on the fight against state and private corruption. It indicates its preference for this option to that of establishing a new assessment mechanism within the EU, and thus calls upon the Member States to support its request for accession. Without this, it will have to propose the creation of an EU specific mechanism. Moreover, the EU insists on the importance of the anti-corruption aspect of relations with third countries. The Commission would like for these recommendations to be enshrined by the European Council.
