08/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Italian industry minister Antonio Marzano said that the European Union's budget policy focussed too much on the short term and that various areas of expenditure (like defence) should be excluded from public deficit calculations. When Italy takes over the presidency of the EU on 1 July 2003, it will start proposing to exclude certain long-term spending from the deficit calculations.
