Brussels, 08/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has denied reports in the Financial Times that US company General Electric will have to sell off considerable assets in order to be given the go-ahead for its planned acquisition of the Finnish medical equipment company Instrumentarium. Commissioner Monti's spokesperson Amelia Torres said the story was purely speculative She also denied reports that a statement of objections would be sent to GE in the next few weeks to warn it of the concessions it would have to make concerning individual monitors, X-ray equipment and mammography machines in particular. We are carrying out an investigation and only at the end of it will we know if we have a statement of objections, explained the spokesperson. After a preliminary investigation, the European Commission expressed concern on 3 April 2003 about the important market share this acquisition would provide GE in the individual monitor sector due largely to Spacelabs, a US subsidiary recently bought up by Instrumentarium. A detailed investigation was launched by the competition services, whose deadline has been set as 18 August 2003.
