Council invites 133 Committee to present solutions for WTO negotiations on services

Luxembourg, 15/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - The EU Council took note, on Monday in Luxembourg, of the report by Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy on the negotiations underway within the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the field of services. The Council conclusions indicate that the ministers held a detailed exchange of views on the initial set of offers made by the EU on services, in particular with regard to the temporary movement of persons linked with the provision of services (see EUROPE of 6 February, p. 8 and 9 April, p. 15). The Council's conclusions note wide ranging agreement between the ministers over the need to achieve rapid progress and obtain attractive results for the developing countries. Some delegations had raised the issue of the technical and political difficulties that remain and the Council decided to entrust the examinations of these difficulties to the Article 133 Committee, which should gather this Wednesday, in order to propose suitable solutions, as quickly as possible.
