Security Council resolution critical of Rauf Denktash

Brussels, 15/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the UN Security Council adopted a resolution by unanimity (1475) regretting the "negative approach of the Turkish Cypriot leader" Rauf Denktash during the meeting on 10-11 March in The Hague, which sank the Annan plan on resolving the Cyprus problem. The Security Council confirmed its support for the "carefully balanced" plan put forward by the UN Secretary General and is requesting him to remain available for helping find a solution to the problem on the island. The Greek agency, ANA, has indicated that Thomas Weston, special coordinator for the USA in Cyprus claimed, following a meeting in Nicosia with the Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Iacovou, that it is certainly necessary to change certain points of the Annan plan in light of the "new situation" created by the accession of the Cypriot Republic to the EU.
