02/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - When the Parliament gave its view, on 27 March, on the Commission's communication entitled "a thematic strategy on the sustainable use of pesticides" (see EUROPE of 1 April, p.16), it called for binding measures aimed at reducing the use of pesticides within the Union. However, contrary to what was stated in our above-mentioned bulletin, the resolution adopted does not fix an overall indicative target of 50% reduction by the year 2010. An amendment put forward by the EPP Group (amendment No 9), voted by the plenary session, was opposed to the initial suggestion made by the parliamentary committee on the environment. The resolution stipulates that the Parliament should invite the Commission to speed up the process of finalising binding and effective measures and fix clear objectives and timetables for each Member State, bearing in mind the reductions already made by some Member States since implementation of their national reduction programmes. We apologise to our readers for this error that arose from an incorrect version of the said amendment communicated by the Parliament after the vote.
