Council could approve Italian aid to co-operatives despite criticism from Commission and four delegations

Brussels, 04/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - Despite European Commission opposition and the misgivings of four delegations (Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands), the next meeting of the Agriculture Council (17 and 18 March) could authorise Italy to grant almost 200m euro in aid (118.7m under national legislation, plus 80.1m under Sicily's specific regional legislation) to fund agricultural co-operatives whose members are personally in debt.
