19/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - While talks on the settlement of the Cypriot problem are to resume shortly before the buffer date of 28 February, Turkey has shown its mistrust toward the newly elected president of the Cypriot Republic. The new president, Tassos Papadopopulos, "carries with him heavy political baggage, including an EOKA identity", the spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Minister said on Wednesday (Reuters). EOKA was a Cypriot guerrilla movement that fought Turkish Cypriots at the time of independence. The elected President of the Cypriot Republic, Tassos Papadopoulos last week met the United Nations negotiator, Alvaro de Soto. Furthermore, a United Nations spokesperson announced that over 1000 people, schools or companies from various countries have put proposals forward at the competition launched by the UN for imagining an anthem or flag for the reunited Cyprus.
