Brussels, 04/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to a "flash estimate" published by Eurostat on Tuesday, inflation in the euro zone amounted to 2.1% in January, against 2.3% in December 2002. Eurostat stipulates that this estimate is more uncertain than usual as "the published figure rests on the German basket of goods and services of the year 1995, whereas the final inflation result for January 2003 will refer to the basket of goods and services and consumer behaviour of the year 2000.". "We cannot say whether that will have an upward or downward effect (for the final figure)", a senior Eurostat official told Reuters. On 28 February, Eurostat will publish the final figures on the rise in prices in the euro zone in February.
