04/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) has awarded the title of Honorary Doctorate to Pascal Lamy, European Commissioner for Trade, for his work at European level. A group of students and some other demonstrators tried to perturb the ceremony, accusing Lamy of accepting the rules of globalisation and not opposing, as EU negotiator within the WTO, the liberalisation and privatisation of public services, especially education (for Lamy's stance, see pages 3 and 4 of this bulletin). Another Honorary Doctor of UCL, Professor Muhammad Yunus, of Chitttagong University, declared on that occasion that he was convinced that "Europe and only Europe" can contribute to a better management of globalisation and the market's respect of social and ecological choices.
