Brussels, 27/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The 15 EU Member States and their Asian counterparts met in Brussels on Monday afternoon as part of the informal ASEM dialogue, for a two-day ministerial meeting on the future of their relations and current events round the world, including terrorism, Iraq, North Korea, Burma and the Middle East. The meeting was opened by the Greek foreign minister George Papandreou and his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong, and was expected to lead to strengthening of anti-terrorist cooperation on Tuesday, both in terms of prevention and dealing with actual threats. They are also expected to discuss current cooperation between the EU and the 23 South-East Asian countries, the work programme for the coming years and new areas of cooperation; changes in the EU and in ASEAN; the world economy; and prospects for greater inter-regional cooperation. The ministers also assessed on Monday evening the future direction of relations between both sides, with the European Commission preparing to finalise a new strategic document on relations with South-East Asia (unlikely to be unveiled until March 2003).
