In event of political agreement, Commission will launch "aid package" and organise conference of international donors to support Turkish Cypriots

Brussels, 24/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Günther Verheugen 'enlargement) has announced that the Foreign Affairs Committee at the European Parliament that if the Greek and Turkish Cypriots find a political agreement on reunification on the basis of the UN plan, the Commission would be prepared to rapidly organise an international donors conference in view of helping fund the costs that such a system would involve (particularly the costs linked to a possible return of Turkish Cypriots to Turkey or the return of certain goods and properties to Greek Cypriots located in the Northern part of the island etc.). It will be necessary for the whole of the international community to take part in such a financial effort because according to Mr Verheugen, "this is not just the responsibility of the European Union ". The Commission is also preparing an "aid package" for Turkish Cypriots" if a political settlement is found, in order to contribute to the socio-economic development of the Northern part of the island. Mr Verheugen also put pressure on negotiators to find a solution before 28 February, the deadline set out in the UN proposal and which they say is really the "ultimate deadline" for the island to join the EU. Mr Verheugen declared that "If there is an agreement by 28 February, Cyprus will therefore be re-united and can sign the accession Treaty on 16 April in Athens. On the subject of the mass mobilisation of Turkish Cypriots in favour of joining the EU, Mr Verheugen directly addressed their leader, Rauf Denktash, asking him to "listen to the voice of the people".
