THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/security/enlargement

24/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The quarterly bulletin of the EU Institute for Security Studies (No 5, January 2003) mainly contains an article by Antonio Missiroli on enlargement of the EU and NATO, two organisations that "ought to reinvent themselves" - the EU with "almost a new founding pact" discussed at the European Convention, and the Alliance by defining new strategic missions. The new Member States will be immediately involved in both processes, he notes. In an article on the EU and Turkey, Dimitrios Triantaphyllou considers it will be necessary to give Turkey time and assistance, if necessary, to "pursue its transformation". Furthermore, he believes, the demands made on Ankara by the Americans in the case of war against Iraq (over 90,000 US soldiers on its territory and the use of its air and naval bases) and the economic and political risks that such a war would entail "could make Turkey gradually reconsider its excessive dependence on the United States".
