THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/convention

09/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - William Abitbol, French Member of the Europe of Democracies and Diversities at the European Convention believes that the development of the debates at the Convention are even more dangerous for popular sovereignty than the abuses of power by Brussels. In his December 2002 edition of "Convention-France", the French sovereignist attacks the general drift towards qualified majority voting and insists that unanimity voting is to sovereignty as dissuasion is to nuclear weapons - "its main principle". Mr Abitpol was ironic when alluding to the Convention "enjoying itself…while standing still" in its work groups that have come to conclusions that are "neither fish nor fowl" and attempts by the Federalists that clash with the political reality in Europe that is becoming increasingly inter-governmental. According to Mr Abitpol, Mr Prodi's proposal "flop…that had stupidly been christened Penelope is proof of the growing disaffection with Commission in Brussels". Mr Abitpol explained that the hall at the Convention may well be federalist but the corridors were intergovernmental. In connection with enlargement, the French politician explained that "future generations would want to know who are these strange leaders who a few days before Christmas 2002, decided that Turkey was in Europe and Russia was not. Ankara yes, Saint Petersburg no".
