09/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - Adopting the report by Manuel Perez Alvarez (EPP-ED, Spain), the EP has endorsed the new protocol to the fisheries agreement between the EU and Senegal for the period from July 2002 to 30 June 2006 (see European of 27 June 2002). Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Greek ships concentrate on tuna, northern prawns, demersal species such as hake and species living in the shoals, such as grouper and cephalopods. Fishing opportunities for EU ships have been reduced for sensitive stocks and technical measures have been introduced, including a two-month biological rest period and a 33% to 50% increase in the number of Senegalese observers on board EU ships. Financial compensation has been increased from EUR 12 million to EUR 16 million, EUR 3 million of which will be used for conserving stocks.
