Brussels, 09/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Luxembourg Prime Minister (and Finance Minister) Jean-Clause Juncker said in an interview published by the Luxemburger Wort on Monday that Luxembourg would not accept any solution that puts Luxembourg's financial position at a competitive disadvantage with regard to Switzerland's financial position. Juncker, who will be meeting Commissioner Frits Bolkestein in Luxembourg on Tuesday ahead of the Ecofin Council meeting on taxation (see Europe of 7 December, p.10), repeated that the negotiations over savings taxation in the EU were certainly not helped by the fact that with the agreement of the British government, a zero tax level would be introduced from 2006 onwards for companies on the Isle of Man. Juncker said in the interview that it was in Luxembourg's interest that agreement was reached on Wednesday had that suitable taxation on savings be foreseen, but he warned that it was important not to "chase capital" out of Europe.
