THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cote d'ivoire

21/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 15 November, the Danish Presidency made the following declaration on behalf of the EU: "The EU urges the parties concerned to sign without delay a protocol of agreement drawn up under the ECOWAS arrangements for dialogue introduced at Lomé after the signing of the ceasefire. The EU supports rapid deployment of the ECOWAS security and monitoring force. The EU condemns all violence against persons from any quarter whatsoever. The EU calls upon authorities throughout the country to investigate fully the assassination of Dr Benoît Dacoury-Tabley and the atrocities committed, and to take steps to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The EU calls on the government to put into effect the reforms proposed by the national reconciliation forum which it has said it is prepared to implement to strengthen the democratisation of the country. The EU reminds neighbouring countries of the need to maintain strict controls on their borders."
