30/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Two Italian MEPs, Radical Maurizio Turco and the elected member of "Italy of Values", Antonio Di Pietro, express surprise that the European Commission has not examined the "compatibility of the C.I.G.S (Cassa integrazione guadagni straordinaria) with Community standards on State aid to enterprise and to employment, an examination that is compulsory under Article 88 of the Treaty". The two MEPs wrote to European Commissioner Mario Monti pointing out that around EUR 120 billion were paid out between January 1977 and February 2002 by this Italian bank intended to guarantee the income of workers of certain categories of enterprise when the productive activity is interrupted or reduced for reasons of reorganisation, restructuring, conversion, etc." (and, they say, benefiting the large companies when even the small firms have to contribute).
