18/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Endorsing the "appreciable" gesture by the European Commission in Luxembourg on Thursday evening in order to pacify minds as far as GMOs are concerned, the US Administration remains, however, sceptical. Does the fact that it had declared conditions had now been met to reactivate procedures for the authorisation of biotechnological products mean the end of the four year moratorium, which is illegal from the European and international viewpoint, is based on considerations that are not scientific but political, and results from decisions taken by Member States, asks the Trade Representative's Office. It adds that only the Member States may put an end to this with an immediate, unconditional and totally unambiguous declaration saying that the process now resumes.
