Brussels, 17/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has approved aid of 38 million euro for General Motors' Opel plant in Azambuja (Lisbon), under regional aid. It aims to help investment for a new production line of a small vehicle, the Corsa Combo. In compliance with the framework for State aid in the motor industry, the Commission recognised the geographic mobility of the project and considered that the General Motors Europe group's Gliwice plant in Poland could have hosted the project. Furthermore, the aid is considered proportional to the region's own handicaps and the "cost-benefit analysis" (that compares costs to be borne by the project in Azambuja with those for an identical project in Gliwice) demonstrated that the additional costs for the project in Azambuja outweighed the aid proposed. At the same time, the Commission authorised a grant of 3 million euro towards the 7 million training aid costs for opel Portugal's internal training in connection with the investment project.
