09/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Whereas Parliament is preparing to approve the EU/Algeria Association Agreement, one of the main opposition leaders, Houcine Ait Ahmed, President of the FFS (Socialist Forces Front), received by the President of the Socialist Group, Enrique Baron, on Tuesday, said he was in favour of the agreement, but pleaded for political vigilance regarding Algeria. The FFS fears that the Algerian government should use the EP's assent as electoral argument (on Thursday, the local elections are being held, heavily perturbed by the clashes in Kabylie). Mr. Baron promised that the Socialist Group would endure that a "clear signal" would be sent, also manifesting its "deep concern" for the situation in Kabylie.
