01/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg last week, the European Parliament adopted a resolution tabled by the chair of the committee on culture and the media, French Socialist Michel Rocard on an "EU action plan for the successful introduction of digital television in Europe". Parliament urges the Commission and Member states to: (1) "make of the development of digital television and access of the public at large to it a major political priority, so as to attain the goal set by the European Council of Lisbon"; (2) present it, "in compliance with Article 18 of the framework-directive, with measures they intend taking to encourage the use of an open interoperable European standard for digital television". Parliament also urges small and medium sized enterprises to "apply as candidates for the EU's 6th framework-programme for research and technological development (2002-2006)".
