Brussels, 01/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on the theme "What is Europe's Future?" during a lunch-debate organised in Brussels by the International Chamber of Commerce - Belgium, the former Belgian Prime Minister, Mark Eyskens, a member of the WEU Assembly, expressed his concern for the international situation, the global economic situation and, above all, the risk of further rejection by Ireland of the Treaty of Nice. In his view, the events of 11 September 2001 had fewer adverse effects on the global economic situation than the bankruptcies of Enron and World.Com. The United States, Mr Eyskens exclaimed, is a great deal of power with very little diplomacy. Europe, however, is inclined towards negotiation, he said, to the rules of conduct at international level, and to the rights of peoples. But this remains theoretical if there is no policeman to make sure it is done, that is the Americans! He felt the Iraqi dossier was full of hypocrisy and noted that many of the countries of the region fear that Saddam Hussein will use his biological and chemical weapons. They therefore agree with the United States that he should be liquidated. Furthermore, peace is not possible in the Middle East until terrorism is stopped, he stressed. (See EUROPE of 5 June, p.5, on the subject of the report by Mr Eyskens on the role of national parliaments in the EU, adopted by the WEU Assembly).
