According to EP, parliaments must be more involved

Strasbourg, 01/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament adopted (407 in favour, 15 against and 46 abstentions) a resolution on the outcome of the Summit on Sustainable Development (see the debate in EUROPE of 27 September) in which it calls for a special debate on the internal and external dimensions of sustainable development at its February plenary session. It places emphasis on: (1) questions of international governance and effective sanctions mechanisms in the field; (2) a reform of international bodies responsible for issues of sustainable development, like the United Nations Committee on Sustainable Development, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO); (3) greater contribution by national parliaments and the European Parliament in the preparatory phase of international conferences. On the initiative of the Greens/EFA, Parliament calls on the Commission to present it with quarterly interim reports and an annual report on partnerships concerning water and energy, the first of which in December 2002. It did, however, reject an amendment tabled by the Greens/EFA urging the Commission and Member states to greatly increase their financial contribution to the UNEP.
