Brussels, 23/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the EU/China Summit, Amnesty International is calling on the Union to put an end to the "so-called dialogue on human rights that is only a monologue which China ignores". "The situation going for bad to worse, one can but observe that the EU has gained no results", the organisation stresses in a press release published on Monday, at the same time as a report referring to a "significant deterioration" in the situation: escalation of death sentences and executions (by far the highest rate in the world), widespread reports of arbitrary detention and torture or ill-treatment of members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement, intensified crackdown on North Korean asylum seekers in China, etc… "Voicing concern at summits is just not good enough when your partner refuses to listen. It is time for the EU to strike a different balance and complements its "constructive engagement" with real pressure, through public scrutiny of China's human rights record at the United Nations, stresses Dick Oosting, Director of Amnesty International's EU Office. (The report, entitled "People's Republic of China: serious human rights violations and the crackdown on dissent continue" is available on the site http: //http://www.amnesty-euro.org ).
