THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/convention/team

13/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - Hans Lindqvist, Coordinator of TEAM (The European Alliance of EU-critical Movements), was highly critical of the draft Constitution presented by the EPP component at the European Convention and of its "creeping federalism" - words used, he said, by the British European Affairs Minister Peter Hain, who is a Member of the Convention. According to Mr Lindqvist, it is time for the many mainstream politicians in the EU Convention and in the national governments and parliaments to speak out, asking: "Do you want a Federal EU State or not?" He goes on to add: politicians like Peter Hain, who say they are in favour of an intergovernmental cooperation, "have been surprisingly silent so far", which is not "honest". For TEAM, the response is clear: "The federal way is the wrong way for the EU" as "a well-functioning federal democracy demands a European people, a demos, which Europe does not have".
