09/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Vietnam Committee on Human Rights says it is deeply concerned by information received from Olivier Dupuis, Lista Bonino MEP, that the Vietnamese government has refused the European Parliamentary delegation permission to meet detained religious figures during their visit to Vietnam (starting in Hanoi on 7 September). The MEPs had requested to meet Thich Huyen Quang, Patriarch of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, detailed without charge in Quang Ngai province for 20 years, his deputy Thich Quang Do, detained in his pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City and Catholic Priest Father Nguyen Van Ly, condemned to 15 years in prison last year.
