Banking sector returns on equity of 11% in 2000

Luxembourg, 02/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - According to Eurostat, the number of credit institutions in the EU continued to decline between 1997-2000, falling from 9,178 to 7,620. While the sector experienced an intense concentration process, employment remained stable during the second half of the decade. The Statistical Office of the Communities indicated that the total balance sheet of EU credit institutions increased by 34.2% over the period, reaching EUR 23 293 in 2000. The profit for the...
