Brussels, 07/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - Following initial reaction son Monday, the Danish Presidency published a declaration on Tuesday referring to the political reforms in Turkey. It declares than the European Union "fully supports the efforts taken by Turkey to conform with the priorities of the Accession Partnership". The Presidency notes that the European Union has welcomed the package of reforms approved on 3 August (see EUROPE 5/6 August). But like the Commission on Monday, it is not making any wholesale decision on the matter. It is simply indicating that "first impressions" demonstrate that it is definitely moving in "the right direction". It points out that the Commission will be examining the reforms in detail on 16 October in its Regular Report. The Presidency and Commission are insisting that the reforms be put into place and call on the Turkish authorities to approve the application rules as soon as possible. The Presidency indicates that, "As emphasised by the European Council of Seville, new decisions on the candidature of Turkey could be taken in view of the developments between the European Councils of Seville and Copenhagen on the basis of the regular report… and in conformity with the conclusions of Helsinki and Laeken". Turkey is insisting that the Copenhagen Summit indicate a date for starting accession negotiations.
