Brussels, 07/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission announced the awarding of additional aid of EUR 60 million for Southern Africa. This aid will be added to the EUR 88.5 million already released in mid-July. Aid will be sent as a priority to the three countries most effected by the humanitarian crisis: Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. Half of the EUR 60 million will be used in the distribution of 80,000 tons of grain, the other half will be used by the European Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO). The Commission has explained that it has financed 300,000 tons of grain in the region over recent yeas, "which corresponds to 20% of estimated needs".
