Brussels, 05/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - In the wake of Sundays bloody terrorist attacks, the EU has urged militant Palestinian groups and Hamas to refrain from further violence. In a declaration on 4 August, the Danish Presidency "condemns in the most categorical way today's terrorist attacks against an Israeli bus near Safed and the shooting incident in the City of Jerusalem, leaving more than 11 killed and many more injured". The Presidency adds that, "Civilians have been targeted in attacks for which Hamas again claims responsibility. Hamas has furthermore in an appalling statement given warning of retaliation for the Israeli air strike in Gaza less than two weeks ago. This is yet another deliberate attempt by Hamas to derail all efforts to fulfil the aspirations of the Palestinian people. The Presidency strongly urges militant Palestinian groups and the leadership of Hamas to refrain from further terrorist attacks. We also urge the Palestinian leadership to take all measures to prevent further terror and take upon themselves to bring the perpetrators to justice. Both parties must do their utmost to work towards bringing the present cycle to a halt. The Presidency strongly urges the parties to continue the recent bilateral talks".
The CFSP High Representative, Javier Solana, condemned the "atrocious bomb attack" against a bus, as well as other acts of violence in Jerusalem. Mr Solana also called for dialogue and reconciliation.
