01/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - According to a study carried out by the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and the European Public Policy Advisors (EPPA) on behalf of the German Ministry of Economics, the German textile industry and trade unions, the abolition of quotas on textile imports from Asia on 2005 will not have a major effect on the German textile industry. The study stresses that most segments used the experience gained over the past decades to restructure and focus production on innovative products such as technical textiles, for which German is the world leader. On the other hand, clothing manufacturers will probably suffer more from the abolition of quotas, although most of their production has already been relocated in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Generally speaking, the CEPS and the EPPA consider that the elimination of quotas will be less dangerous for the textile industry than is often feared, and therefore call for trade liberalisation to be continued in this sector.
