Commission appeals against US justice's contraband cigarettes ruling

Brussels, 19/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - As we reported on 21 March 2002, the European Commission has filed an appeal against the US District Court of New York's ruling dismissing the Commission's action against three cigarette manufacturers (Phillip Morris, RJ Reynolds and Japan Tobacco) concerning the negative impact on the Community budget caused by cigarette smuggling (see Europe of 21 February). In a press release, the European Commission notes that 10 Member States are participating in the appeal (the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and Austria are not involved, Ed) and that it has the support of the WHO and two US organisations: Tobacco Free Kids and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.
