Romano Prodi sets up high level study group

Brussels, 19/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - 19/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, decided on Friday to set up a high level study group to review all economic instruments currently existing at EU level (internal market and connected policies, EMU and budget) and to consider whether they are suitable in the context of enlargement. The group will also examine whether new policies are indispensable to guarantee growth, stability and cohesion. Romano Prodi asked the group to unveil its final report in the spring of next year. The work will be assisted, for the preparation of the report, by the Commission's group of political advisors. The study group will be made up of figures from academia and the banking world, led by André Sapir, Economics Professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels).
